Do you love Indian food but don’t have the time or knowledge to make it?

It’s no secret that I’m a girl on the go. I’m balancing grad school, working full time, and blogging. I’m trying to get settled in a new apartment, planning my dog’s birthday party, and still running twice a week. My busy schedule doesn’t allow much room for cooking so I’m always looking for fast, healthy food options.

So when my friend Mitra Raman reached out, the founder of Buttermilk, and asked me to try a few Indian food meals I was so excited! I love Indian food but don’t know how to make it myself.

What is Buttermilk?

Packets of Buttermilk & Co - Indian Food - Rasam - Dichi

Buttermilk is a local Seattle start up dedicated to bring you fresh Indian food. Buttermilk offers 5 different Indian meal packets that require only a pot of water to create. These non-GMO, vegan packets last 1-2 weeks.

Who is the founder of Buttermilk?

My friend Mitra is boss babe. She was inspired to share her mom’s traditional Indian food with the rest of the world after being a homesick college student. (I can completely relate to this because as a college student, I really missed my mom’s cooking!) Not only is she an entrepreneur, she is also a software development manager for Amazon.

How does Buttermilk work?

You head to Buttermilk website and select which packets you want to cook. Buttermilk is currently in beta for Greater Seattle area so you can request access using “EMMA + BUTTERMILK”.

After your packets are delivered and you’re ready to get cooking, you look at the directions of each packet to see how much water to boil. You add the packet to the boiling pot after about 10 minutes and stir!

And ta-da delicious Indian food is made for you!

What Buttermilk Meals did I try?

For this blog post, my friend/photographer Holly and I tried the Khidichi and Daal for the first time. These two are traditional Indian meals:

DAAL (yellow packet featured above)

Description: Daal is a simple lentil dish that goes well with almost anything. It consists of a mixture of different lentil seeds and spices that come through subtly without being too overpowering.

Buttermilk & Co: Daal (Indian Food)

Best meal for: Lunch or dinner with rice, or as a soup appetizer (especially if watered down)

Best eaten with:

  • Rice packet
  • Add traditional Indian pickles for spice
  • Breads (naan, roti, paratha, etc.)

Ingredients: Tomato, Toor Daal, Moong Daal, Cilantro, Chana Daal, Vegetable Oil, Salt, Cumin Seeds, Asefotida, Ginger, Turmeric, Curry Leaves, Green Chili, Red Chilies

KHICHDI

Description: Khichdi is a common comfort food in all parts of India. Each state makes it a little differently, but it usually contains some vegetables or nuts, a few spices, and a wheat and lentil mixture. Our khichdi is made of semolina flour and lentils mixed with vegetables, spices, and turmeric.

I loved how easy it was to make a unique meal in 10-15 minutes! Especially since right when I come home from work, I have to take Boone to the dog park. And by the time I get home, I’m usually starving. It was so easy to boil a pot of water, add the packet, and stir. I highly recommend Buttermilk if you’re a fan of Indian food and/or don’t have the time to cook.

If you’re interested in Buttermilk, here’s what to do next:
