One of my most asked questions on the blog and Instagram are: what do you do with your hands in photos?
I remember asking myself this question when I first started blogging. I was worried about looking awkward, out of place, or clumsy. I was also worried about looking to tense or unwelcoming. But with practice and a few go to poses, I figured out what to do with my hands in photos. So today I’m passing on my tips and tricks on what to do with your hands!
No matter who you are in life, you will probably run into a situation where your photo needs to be taken. So whether you’re at brunch with your girlfriends or getting a professional LinkedIn photo taken, here are a few tips on what to do with your hands in pictures.
Hands in Photos – Tip #1: Put your hands in your pockets

Hands and pockets are the perfect pair. If you’re wearing jeans, I don’t recommend cramming your hand in the pocket all the way. However you can stick your thumb OR part of your hand in your pocket for a more natural look.
If you have pockets in the front of your dress, you can play around with posing with your hands in the pockets.

Hands in Photos – Tip #2: Let your arms naturally hang by your side

This is probably the simplest thing to do with your hands. The trick is to keep your hands relaxed. If your hands are tightened up into fist, people will notice. So just keeping your arms naturally at your sides will help hands also look relaxed.
Hands in Photos – Tip #3: Hold something in your hands– like a bag, glass of champagne, or accessory

If you’re just starting out and want to get comfortable in front of the camera, holding a prop will help you figure out what to do with your hands. In over half my photos, I’m holding a bag, something to eat, a hat, a drink, or even flowers.
If you’re at a coffee shop, you can practice with props by holding a cup of coffee. Or if you brought a pen and notebook, you can pretend like your writing as your taking the photo. Putting something in your hands will help take the stress off what you’re supposed to do with your hands.

Hands in Photos – Tip #4: Play with your hair

I always have a few go to poses where I’m playing or fixing my hair. Just reaching up and tucking your hair behind your ear is one way to position your hands in the photo!
Hands in Photos – Tip #5: Frame your face with your hands

As you get more comfortable taking photos, you can start playing around with how to intentionally use your hands to frame your face. My go to pose in framing my face is bringing a hand underneath my chin!
Hands in Photos – Tip #6: Put your hands on your hips

To start creating angles when you pose, simply put your hands on your hips. You’ll see me put one hand and both hands on my hips depending where I am. I also put my hands on my hips both when I’m standing and when I’m sitting.
There you have it friends! I hope you enjoyed this tips and hope you know what to do with your hands for your photos!

As much as I have taken photos in my life, I am still very awkward! Lol Add in my hands and Houston, we have got a problem!! I love pockets but I seem to jam my hands in my pocket forgetting that it will make my pictures look wrong! Then I think too hard about it and my photos turn out all serious! Ha! Can’t win right? I love to hold something too but when it’s game time I lose all I know and somehow just pose awkwardly. These are great tips though and I will try the face framing and hair touching. I just need to remember to be natural. I got this! Happy Friday Emma! Wishing you a fabulous weekend!
