Are you looking for posing ideas for your blog, Instagram, or your next photo shoot? Here is are a few tips on how to pose sitting down.
One way I like to add variety to my photo shoots is to mix in standing and sitting shots. If I’m posing with a friend, sitting down helps even out our heights. Sitting down for photos also helps give levels to the shot. Here are 7 ways you can pose sitting down:
1. Sit on the stairs
One way to add symmetry or interesting lines to your photos is to sit on a staircase. I would recommend playing around extending your legs out to different steps.
2. Sit at coffee shop
If you’re looking to add sitting down shots, one place to do that is at a coffee shop. It’ll feel natural to sit at a table and a cup of coffee or tea. You can put your elbows on top of the table or hold the coffee cup. You can also pose with a friend!
3. Sit on the ground
If you’re shooting in the shadows and trying to avoid a really bright background/a background in sunlight, you can shoot on the ground to get even lighting.
This is exactly what Sam and I did to get this shot. It was a really sunny day so we decided to sit on the ground to avoid a backlit photo.
Sitting on the ground also helps you highlight the background. Holly and I wanted to feature this building in Tacoma in the frame so we crossed the street to capture it in the background.
4. Bringing one leg up
You’ve probably seen this pose over and over again from your favorite fashion bloggers. I don’t know what it is about bringing one leg up and keeping one leg down – but this pose always works for photos.
5. Sit on a curb
If you’re shooting in the city or your neighborhood, sitting on a curb is a really easy way to mix in a sitting shot.
6. Sit in a chair
This is probably the most straightforward sitting shot you can take. One way you can mix up it up is to lean back on your chair. We found this red chair at one of the antique shops in Tacoma and it made it a more interesting photo to pose with it!
If you’re wanting to add some height while sitting on a chair, one tip I have is to extend your foot/leg towards the camera. I’m petite so I’m always thinking about how to elongate my frame, even while sitting down.
7. Sit on a windowsill
One way to create an interesting shot is to frame the photo with a windowsill. If there’s space on the windowsill, sitting down and looking out the window makes a fun photo. You can find this windowsill at the Top of the Rock – Rockefeller Center in New York City.
8. Cross your legs
Crossing your legs is an easy way to position your legs while sitting down to take a photo. I recommend angling yourself either to the left or right to take the shot. Angling yourself will help still give yourself some height sitting down.
